Species & Habitat

Signature bird & wildlife: Rich and varied native habitat supports most of the native birds of north central Illinois. Spring and fall migrations bring the greatest variety of species. Bird feeders are maintained outside the windows of the visitor center. Known to see Eastern Wood Peewee.
Rare bird & wildlife: Cerulean Warbler, Redheaded Woodpecker, Pileated Woodpecker, and Eastern Phoebe.
Habitats: Woodlands, Stream, Restored Prairie, and Dolomite Cliffs. Home to Severson Dells Nature Preserve.

Admission Charges: None
Hours of operation: Daylight except for special events. Visitor center 8:00 to 4:30
Seasonality of site: Preserve properties open to public for year round use - some roads or gates not accessable or open in winter months for vehicle travel.
Site Restrictions: No Pets Allowed, As per the Forest Preserves General Use Ordinance and Regulations (see District Web Site)

Amenities: parking areas, restrooms, drinking fountain, viewing platform/observation blind, visitors center, gift shop/book store, handicap accessible
Other: Outdoor educational playground and concert area has been added recently. Also has a pavel trail loop and mowed hiking trails.


Historical/cultural attributes at or near site: The Nature Center along with The Grove, a nature playscape that provides children with many opportunities to explore, climb, build and create.
